Hoarding Again & The Great Summer Reading Program

June 11, 2014

Our book hoarding issues come as no surprise, we know that, there is no help for us here anymore and yet we’ve been at it again and have hit the Yes button so that even more copies of (great looking) reads are sent to us. Then, there is also our public library which has been on fire for bringing in these great, current and new titles, all of which of course when you throw a hold on them have this crazy tendency to come in all at once (it’s happening – and right now!)!

So, The Great Summer Reading Program must commence! (We must also learn to just say no! ;-) ) Blinders on and these are some of the books that will make up part of our summer reading. We know there will be at least a dozen more added, but for now the focus will be (should be, must be) on these titles, all of which look like we’ll have very enjoyable summer reading! The weather has been extremely cooperative and allows for many, many lovely and glorious weekends and evenings outside on our patios, sipping our favourite bevvies and reading away.

First up is what has been coming in – and just in this last week and will be available starting this weekend – from the public library. Holds were put on these sometime ago, and one always hopes they at least come in a more scattershot way – alas, no, never the case! Panic ensues because the reading starts to take on an anxious manner since we don’t want to be put in the position where we can’t read these! There was a reason we threw a hold on them in the first place.

The History of the Rain, by Niall Williams

The Rise & Fall of Great Powers, by Ted Rachman (this is for the Critical Era book club)

Eyrie, by Tim Winton

The Visitors, by Sally Beauman

All the Light We Cannot See, by Anthony Doerr

Moving on, we have all the books that have been sent to us recently and then of course (it’s a disease as Hoarder Jackie says) we cannot help but browse through NetGalley and found a bunch more to add to the piles- the ones off of NetGalley come with early archive dates in August so we need to make sure we get cracking and read those! Here is everything from these two “categories”, and we do plead for patience – we will read these – we will get to them! (again BLINDERS ARE ON!) ;-) Hold on, there are a lot here. :-) (But come on! How could we say no to any of these?)

The Secret Life of Violet Grant, by Beatriz Williams (no, this one wasn’t sent to us, but Penny listened to the audio of A Hundred Summers last year during the summer and the same narrator is reading this one, so Penny bought it and will be listening to this one – what could be a more perfect summertime listen?!)

We’ve got our patios prepped with the umbrellas, drinkies and comfortable chairs! And, for part of this summer – our vacation bags packed too – and we’re ready to get down to some wonderful summer reading. (We just need to stick to the program!)

It’s crazy! But it’s good too – we should be able to find some great reads in here!

Looks like you’ve got your work cut out for you! I am trying to take the summer off from reading ARCs and anything on NetGalley – we’ll see how far i get with that! I’m eyeing a couple of books you’ve listed, but I intend to take it one day at a time and see where my mood takes me.

I think we need to take the summer off of saying YES to any new requests that come in eh? ;-) Need to clear the stash because the guilt becomes overwhelming when those books sit there and stare at you. We can do this! (provided we stick to the program)
