This post WWII story is about a young woman who leaves everything she knows in a small Irish town to take a job in Brooklyn. When it started, I thought that the main character was a bit of a mouse. As it turned out, Eilis Lacey was nothing of the sort, and the development of her character was a great read. What began as all innocence and charm grew into something much more self-aware, complicated and intelligent. You don’t have to be loud to assert yourself. No mouse here. Tiobin’s writing is marvelous, and he lets the reader right in. He doesn’t miss a thing with his quiet descriptions, and you won’t either. 4 stars!
